MEISTERN & VERGESSEN: GESCHWISTER

The title Mastering & Forgetting: Siblings, refers to an essay by Jean-Francois Billeter - a reading lead from my taijiquan teacher Jean-Michel Chomet - about the book Zhuangzi by Zhuang Zhou - so his name is also the title -, beside the Tao Te Ching the other basic text of the taoism eventhough the philospher Billeter would like to perceive and classify his collegue from 2300 years ago as an entirely independant poet and spirit. Which he definitely was.
In the context of mastering and forgetting it´s about the learning, the process. An equanimity takes shape, above or besides the known and learned which arises from the it-goes-without-saying.
The forgetting comes along with the mastership. It sets in when basic forces start to work and consciousness can refrain from piloting the processes like it did before, and forget itself.

Zhuangzi says: What I call learning is learning of what can´t be learned…
Behind that gleams the wish for respect and something like humility and reverence:
The highest form of cognition is the one who pauses in front of what it can´t recognize…
To know what the action of heaven consists of: Above that there is nothing. Those who know what the action of heaven consists of are living according to heaven. Those who (really) know what human action consists of, are nurturing what their consciousness capture with what it doesn´t capture.
The passage opens out into the interjection:
Oh, did I only know somebody who would forget the language so I could talk to him!
How does this forgotten language sound?
This is a question for the music!

There is an interesting film called Arrival. It´s about the arrival of an alien species. It lands simultanously in different places on earth, in a longish huge egg which at a closer view reminds you rather of a shell.
A female linguist is asked to listen to an extract of a conversation in which two representatives of this alien species answer to questions of the Americans. What you hear is a sort of breathing out and a flapping of wings, and the man from the CIA asks the scientist:
How would you approach translating this?

Later they communicate, the linguist and the two strangers who look like gigantic tubercules walking on hands or like strolling roots. In front of a transparent wall they produce circles - perfect circles like Chinese calligraphy -, circles which differ in a subtle way, signs like ink emitted under water.

The film is a good example of how important it is to be respectful facing what you don´t know or recognize.

All instruments I dabble on right now are hearable at the same time: melodion, bass flute, portative & bass harmonica.
Beside the evident interest in interferences and its beats etc. Meistern & Vergessen: Geschwister is about elegance and ruptures, the descent.
In contrast to previous works it stands out that this composition gets along entirely without reverberation and the question remains what´s attractive about it.
Eventhough quite often you get the impression as if the sounds could be, could sound forever and that particularly the bass harmonica sometimes sound like being provided with reverberation, the mix in question then breaks off abruptly.
This could sharpen the attentiveness: you can sink into sound but the consciousness is called up unmistakably again and again.
This exercise of perception gets reinforced by the fact that the instruments are quite difficult to distinguish: eventhough you stay vigilant it´s all one according to the motto:
Myriad things observed equally,
Return to naturalness.
It´s like stretching an elastic and then let go.

Main focus was the sound: to create, with as few means as possible, a great variety of sounds, not with regard to harmonical or even melodical and rhythmical structures - although towards the end a distinguishable varied riff is creeping in - but with regard to sound, tone color, timbre.
And it simply works out best without overlapping reverberations. On the other hand a continuous change was sought between opulent and complicated seeming sounds and those who appear simple, quasi frugal.

One part of the whole is a result of montage - though all tones and chords are played as heard, that is to say I have neither shorten nor extend them and also the chronology I kept -, the other one, that is two tracks of the melodion, has been finally »synchronized«: I taped them by watching the monitor with the previous layers, the rough montage.

Road Works I: The astonishing aspect of such photos: they leave everything to the eye of the viewer. Everything means: their whole existence, their expression and their message. One says this would be a - though unsharp - reflection of the so called reality. But don´t these photos in the contrary make clear that reality in general is a construct of thoughts, interpretating sense perceptions? Eventhough they are titled or described in a way that shows their origin, this origin can´t be seen but only imagined.

PORTARE

Carrying what?… nature’s candle flickers... finally blinks... is still a pal though… can you see?… the senses weigh less…

who's seen the swallows with their spiky screech, lost in motion, my daily draught, invisible smoke of time... watching, watching, staring into loudless blur, the outbreath of amazement, huh... and further on...

who else... wants to be the jester of knowledge… though the sky is clear and calm, whenever you want.

no erinyes, just children of the night who skirmish... where have you been, where are you now?… when it gets darker, you'll hear the sound of laughter.

history on a cart, no psephos, a puppet theater... blow gently into the scene... the characters get dispersed... and bromides blossom.

smooth and mellow... the grass still growing, the trees are moving faster, and the light... caresses your eyelids.

Portare means to bring and carry.

What or who is carrying us?

Portare heißt bringen und tragen.

Was oder wer trägt uns?

The instrument is portable. That´s why it´s named portative. But you play it sitting on a stool, it lays upon your left thigh. For it stands upright, the left foot rests on a log and its bottom side is arched. Behind the keys there are the pipes. With the left hand you press the bellow, with the right hand you touch the keys. Also there are lead weights to create drones, that is to say mostly deep sustained notes.

In a certain way it´s about an extinct instrument. It is still produced, on demand and/or in small quantities but only used in performances of Early Music. In the Middle Ages though it was en vogue.

Rainer Groß from Armsheim northeast of Frankfurt built it. He is a Church Music Director and in his spare time constructs portatives.

This one is a fox, so reddish brown, it´s made out of cedarwood; normally one uses oak timber.

Equanimity and silence are the mottoes.

A big Thank You to Rainer Groß for this wonderful instrument!

Here comes the flute: the sound is quite similar, only the pitch is lower.

You can let tones sound up to 45 seconds. Pressing the bellow either hard or gentle you also have a certain influence on the height of tones and can produce »dirty« chords and/or intervals.
I was interested in - like in LUFTSILBER, using different melodions and melodicas out of tune - the interferences, the chafing oscillations and wolfe tones of these intervals.
Actually PORTARE is one self-contained piece, nevertheless do the six tracks  - like with ANGELS - also have a beginning and an end.
